Album Story

Mio Asakura was born in Azabu, the same Tokyo neighborhood that gave the label its name. Trained on piano from childhood and singing jazz in a Roppongi club when Jun Sugiura discovered her, she debuted in 1983 with Crystal Avenue — ten songs of secret, grown-up love, all set after dark.

The album opens on its fastest, darkest note. A woman changes into a black dress and disappears into the lights of Nishi-Azabu, nameless for one night. The backseat of a taxi holds two people’s silence. A lighter left in an ashtray becomes something she carries but never uses.

Then the night slows down, song by song. A wristwatch checked once too often. A harbor-view room after the last train has gone. A phone that never rings — and a quiet relief that it doesn’t. At a hotel bar, she notices the bare finger across the counter and chooses not to ask.

By the closing two songs, the tempo has fallen to a whisper. A brass room key warms in her palm as the curtains turn white, and two glasses are left side by side. Even here, Crystal Avenue never says who he was — only that, for a few hours before dawn, it was true.
