Album Story

Reina Tachibana grew up on the Shonan coast, and never quite left it behind. Scouted in Tokyo while working as a model, she debuted in 1981 with Summer Mirage — ten songs built around the same pull that never let her go: the sea she grew up beside, and the city that kept pulling her away from it.

The album opens where she started. A coastal road unwinds under an open roof. A surfboard gets loaded into a car before sunrise, aimed at someone not yet a lover. A beach-house radio keeps playing past the point summer should have ended. These songs breathe like open water — bright, unhurried, in no rush to arrive anywhere.

Then Tokyo pulls her back. The view shifts from passenger seat to office window: a friend’s question laughed off on the bayfront, a phone that won’t ring on an ordinary afternoon, city lights blurring past a windshield while some part of her stays at the shoreline. Even at its most urban, Summer Mirage never quite loses the sea — it just learns to carry it quietly, in a stray trace of salt air on a crowded platform.

By the closing two songs, the drive has come to a stop — a ferry nearly missed, a letter written to someone far away and sent without knowing if it will ever be answered. Even here, at its quietest, Summer Mirage still sounds like a woman with the whole coastline still ahead of her.
